by providing employers with highly trained incumbent workers, offering foundation skills to
residents wishing to explore or enter new work professions in technical and skilled occupations,
providing access to all groups and individuals throughout our nine-county service region, and by
offering the community a place to improve their sense of well-being and create a satisfying life.
For these reasons, the WFT/CE Division works with regional employers to survey need for
trained workers by conducting periodic community needs assessments and by meeting and
engaging with regional economic development organizations such as Grow Idaho Falls, The
Development Company, Regional Workforce Innovation Team, Regional Development Alliance,
Partners for Prosperity, Idaho Department of Labor, public schools and sister institutions of
higher education. A major result of these efforts has been the creation of a large-scale
incumbent worker program in Environmental Safety & Health (ES&H) training established in
partnership with the Idaho National Laboratory, which provides over 40 compliance-driven
courses in support of various laws, requirements, and DOE Orders serving some 6,200
employees in FY2012. Additionally, credit and non-credit continuing education courses are
offered in collaboration with the U.S. Forest Service, Bureau of Land Management, Department
of Interior, and the Bureau of Indian Affairs, annually training wildland firefighters who respond
to wildland fires in southern Idaho, western Wyoming, all of Utah, Nevada, and nationally.
The WFT/CE Division also manages the institution’s Professional Truck Driver training and
Radiation Safety training programs to train residents for high-wage, high-demand entry-level
employment. The Professional Truck Driver training program offers a six-week, intensive hands-
on program to train entry level long-haul professional truck drivers. Annually, approximately
30-33 new students gain marketable employment skills necessary to enter the transportation
industry. The Division’s Radiation Safety Program typically enrolls 16-20 students pursuing
entry-level employment in the nuclear industry. Graduates are prepared to enter this high-
paying job market as Junior Radiological Control Technicians eligible to perform work at
commercial nuclear power plants, U.S. Department of Energy National Laboratories, dosimetry
laboratories, medical facilities, accelerators, and independent and university research facilities
that work with radioactive material. However, with the advent of the American Recovery and
Reinvestment Act of 2009 and a $787 billion stimulus package, a large number of junior
radiological control technicians were trained nationwide to meet radiological waste cleanup
needs at the nation’s DOE Complexes. With the completion of the stimulus package, EITC will
be discontinuing the Radiation Safety training program as job placement for new graduates has
declined beyond a reasonable level.
WFT’s rural outreach community education classes are also available live throughout our nine-
county service delivery area. Currently, WFT/CE offers non-credit and credit classes in the
communities of Salmon, Rexburg, St. Anthony, and Driggs, Idaho. In FY2012, EITC served over
700 place-bound and rural residents in these communities in live courses. Online courses were
offered to over 220 rural students in over 300 course areas. Outreach courses are located in
rural small business incubators and public school district facilities.
