Overview

We teach you basic skills in multiple areas of patient care. Clinical skills include using sterile technique and infection control, recording patient information, taking vital signs and preparing patients for examinations, collecting and processing specimens, and assisting with minor in-office surgeries. Administrative skills include scheduling patients, preparing and maintaining records, performing administrative skills and medical transcription, handling telephone calls, and writing correspondence. You learn assistance in all aspects of patient care under the physician's supervision.

Requirements

Application Checklist

Students wanting to apply for the Medical Assistant program at College of Eastern Idaho (CEI) must submit all of the following application materials for review:

  • Application for admission
  • Official High School/GED transcript
  • Official transcripts from ALL colleges attended
  • Mandatory orientation
  • Completed required immunizations
  • Copy of completed background check from Pre-Check (no older than 60 days from paperwork deadline)
  • Official American Heart Association BLS for Healthcare Provider OR American Red Cross Healthcare Provider card (must be current)
  • QuantiFERON - TB Gold Plus test completed within 3 months of starting the program.
    • Students who have tested positive for TB in the past will also need to submit a chest x-ray.
  • Drug Screen
  • Physical Exam

Additional Program Requirements

  • Immunizations: All students are required to submit proof of their immunizations prior to their entrance into the professional program. It is recommended to verify your own records early as some shots can take up to eight months to complete. A list of the required immunizations will be listed in the professional application packet.
  • Background Check: As part of the professional program application students will be required to submit a current criminal background check. Students with past felony convictions and/or misdemeanors may not be admitted to the program. The CEI’s Healthcare department will utilize the Background Check, Idaho Repository, and clinical institution standards to evaluate these convictions. Students must meet all standards required by CEI and clinical institutions to be admitted and to remain in the Medical Assistant program.
  • Drug Testing: All applicants in the professional portion of the program will be subject to a drug screening. students are also subject to random drug screenings throughout the program.
  • Tattoos and Piercing: Having tattoos and piercings will not necessarily keep you out of the program, but it may make it very difficult to find a job. The school and employers in the area have agreed that tattoos are fine as long as they are not on the face, neck, or hands; any further tattoos must be covered. No visible tattoos will be allowed. Only one set of earrings will be permitted - no other piercings will be allowed.

The Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB)
The Medical Assisting Education Review Board (MAERB) is a Committee on Accreditation (CoA) for the Commission on Accreditation for Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP). As a CoA of CAAHEP, MAERB performs the everyday work of accreditation for medical assisting education programs: setting up and conducting site visits, organizing and reviewing annual reports for compliance with established outcome thresholds, providing workshops, resources, and training for programs and site surveyors; and submitting recommendations for CAAHEP Board Action.


MAERB works collaboratively with CAAHEP to develop the CAAHEP Standards and Guidelines for the Accreditation of Educational Programs in Medical Assisting.
