October 14, 2026
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — College of Eastern Idaho instructor Heidi Tighe received the Idaho GEM Innovative Educator Award in Written Communication at the Idaho General Education Summit, held Oct. 1–2 in Boise. This marks the third consecutive year a CEI faculty member has earned one of the statewide GEM Awards.
The Idaho GEM (General Education Matriculation) Innovative Educator Award recognizes faculty at Idaho colleges and universities for excellence in general education teaching, innovative instructional practices, student engagement and educational accessibility.
Tighe’s nomination highlighted writing assignments that connect classroom learning to real challenges in students’ lives and communities. Through these assignments, students apply research, critical thinking, communication and problem-solving skills in meaningful ways. Reviewers also recognized her commitment to educational access and helping students develop skills that support success in college and beyond.
“Heidi exemplifies the best of general education by connecting classroom learning to real-world challenges,” said CEI President Lori Barber. “Her commitment to helping students think critically, engage meaningfully, and recognize the value of education is inspiring. We are proud to see her work recognized statewide.”
Faculty members are nominated by their institutions and submit portfolios that include a nomination letter, teaching statement and instructional materials. Faculty representatives and members of the statewide GEM Committee review submissions, considering student learning, engagement, disciplinary understanding, access and affordability.
During the summit, Tighe joined fellow award recipients for a panel discussion on innovative teaching practices and approaches to supporting student success in general education.
Other CEI faculty members also contributed to the statewide gathering. Katie Fonnesbeck, Director of Early College Programs at CEI presented a breakout session on dual credit and its role in expanding educational opportunities for Idaho students.
The State's General Education Committee plays a vital role in communicating with and informing the Idaho State Board of Education on issues surrounding the teaching and role of general education in the eight public colleges and universities.Dean Jacob Haeberle represents the college on the committee, while Dean Matt Taylor represents Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Katie Fonnesbeck represents Dual Credit.
