New Associate of Engineering Degree Right Here in Idaho Falls
April 08, 2026
IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — College of Eastern Idaho will launch a new Associate of Engineering degree beginning in Fall 2026, creating a streamlined pathway for students who plan to transfer to a four-year university and pursue careers in engineering.
Designed with transfer success in mind, the program frontloads key mathematics and engineering coursework so students arrive at their next institution prepared to enter as full juniors. The degree also requires only 15 credits of general education, allowing students to focus more heavily on foundational engineering courses earlier in their academic journey.
“For many students, being able to start their engineering education close to home makes a real difference,” said Kole Bowman, Department Chair of Math, Science, and Engineering at College of Eastern Idaho. “This degree allows them to complete their first two years in smaller classes where instructors have more time to work with them, helping students build a strong foundation in math and engineering so they’re better prepared when they transfer.”
Students in the program will study in the Battelle Energy Alliance Future Tech Building in partnership with Frontier Credit Union, CEI’s newest facility dedicated to advanced technology and workforce programs. The Associate of Engineering program will occupy the southwest corner of the first floor, providing students with a dedicated space to collaborate, study, and prepare for upper-division engineering coursework.
Unlike career-focused technical programs designed for immediate workforce entry, the Associate of Engineering degree is specifically structured as a transfer pathway. CEI worked closely with Idaho’s three state universities to develop the program and ensure alignment with bachelor’s degree requirements, helping students transition smoothly into four-year engineering programs.
The degree also offers flexibility, allowing students to begin exploring specialized engineering fields while completing their foundational coursework.
Registration for Fall 2026 courses opens mid-March for current CEI students and April 6th for new degree seeking students.
