What is an Associate of Arts Degree?

At CEI, you design the degree you want. The flexibility of the Associate of Arts degree means you can personalize your pathway toward whichever four-year degree you are aiming for. We have multiple pathways into various fields, all transferring to the university or college of your choice. Simply identify your pathway, complete the 36 credits of required GEM courses, then use the remaining 24 credits to focus on your area of interest. With careful planning and advising, you can arrive at your transfer college as a full Junior!

And by offering a wide range of learning experiences and modalities, faculty here at CEI meet you where you are and empower you to complete your journey toward success.

GEM Explained

General Education Matriculation

General Education Matriculation (GEM) for Idaho higher education refers to a set of core courses that students in Idaho's public colleges and universities are required to take to graduate. These courses are typically in English, math, science, and social studies and are intended to provide students with a well-rounded education and a strong foundation in the liberal arts. GEM “stamped,” or approved as GEM, courses may vary by institution, so students need to check with their school to see which courses are required for graduation.

The six GEM competency areas are:

  • Written Communication (GEM 1)
  • Oral Communication (GEM 2)
  • Mathematical Ways of Knowing (GEM 3)
  • Scientific Ways of Knowing (GEM 4)
  • Humanistic and Artistic Ways of Knowing (GEM 5)
  • Social and Behavioral Ways of Knowing (GEM 6)
