Program Overview
This 8-week course provides students with the knowledge and skills required to draw blood safely and effectively for diagnostic purposes. Through a combination of lectures, labs, and online assignments, students will learn various blood draw techniques and will leave class prepared to sit for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification exam through the National Healthcare Association (NHA).
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be equipped to:
- Explain the anatomy and physiology of the circulatory system
- Safely utilize venipuncture and capillary puncture techniques
- Understand infection control and safety procedures
- Appropriately handle and process blood specimens
Certification
Upon successful completion of this course, along with the required venipunctures and capillary or finger sticks, students will be eligible to sit for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) certification exam through the National Healthcare Association (NHA). After passing their exam, students will be certified to work in the medical field as phlebotomy technicians.

Registration Process
Registration for the Certified Phlebotomy Technician program can only be completed once a student has received approval of their prerequisite submissions. Seats are limited and submission does not guarantee a seat in class. To register:
- Create a student profile and browse available course sessions on our student registration platform
- Complete prerequisite submission using the Certified Phlebotomy Technician Enrollment Form
- Once prerequisites have been reviewed and approved, students will receive an email containing instructions for completing the registration process
- Complete registration by following the instructions in the approval email and paying tuition in full

Prerequisites
To register, students must be at least 18 years old and submit proof of:
- High school diploma or GED
- Current health insurance
Please Note: CEI Workforce Training & Continuing Education does not provide coverage for personal injury or illness. Because lab activities can involve some risk, it is now required that all students carry their own health insurance while enrolled.
In accordance with current Idaho legislation, immunizations are not required for enrollment in this course. However, students should be aware that phlebotomy training involves direct exposure to blood and potential contact with bloodborne pathogens. For your personal safety, it is strongly recommended that you are up to date on all routine vaccinations, including completion of the Hepatitis B vaccination series. Students assume responsibility for their own health protection while participating in course activities.

- Scrubs must be solid colors (no patterns, no white), and students must wear matching tops and bottoms. Students will be permitted to wear a solid-colored long sleeve shirt underneath their scrubs if they desire.

Exams
Upon successful completion of the classroom requirements, students will be eligible to sit for the National Healthcare Association (NHA) Certified Phlebotomy Technician (CPT) exam.
- After successfully completing the course, students will be notified of their scheduled exam date. Students will need to log in to their NHA account at https://www.nhanow.com/ to register for the exam on the specified date.
- The certification exam will be administered at CEI's Testing Center, located in Building 1 on the CEI main campus.
- Students must bring a photo ID to the testing center and should be prepared to pay a $29.00 exam fee with a credit or debit card.
Schedule
This course aligns with the CEI academic calendar and runs as an early 8-week course in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. Classes meet on main campus, twice per week (TTH) from 1:00pm to 3:50pm. Attendance Policy
Regular attendance is essential to student success, as important course content, demonstrations, and hands-on activities are covered throughout the program. While we understand that unexpected circumstances may arise, students are expected to attend all scheduled class sessions.
Students are subject to the attendance requirements outlined in their course syllabus. Failure to comply with the attendance policy, including exceeding the allowable number of absences, may result in a grade reduction.
DOES THIS COURSE INCLUDE CLINICAL ROTATIONS?
No. In lieu of clinical rotations, this class provides hands-on training in an in-class mock clinical setting.
WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THIS PROGRAM AND THE PHLEBOTOMY, BTC PROGRAM?
Phlebotomy courses are offered through both the academic (credit) side of the college and through Workforce Training (WTCE). Students in either program will learn alongside each other for the duration of the WTCE Certified Phlebotomy Technician course. The primary differences between the programs are duration and program requirements. The WTCE CPT program spans over 8 weeks and does not require students to take any additional courses, whereas the Phlebotomy, BTC program spans over the course of 16 weeks and requires students to take an additional 13 credits.
Students who successfully complete the WTCE CPT program and pass the national certification exam are prepared to enter the workforce as certified phlebotomy technicians. The BTC program provides the same certification pathway while also allowing students to earn college credits that can be applied toward future educational and career advancements in healthcare.

DO YOU OFFER PAYMENT PLANS?
No. Payment is due in full at the time of registration for all WTCE classes.
IS THERE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE?
Yes. This course is approved for Idaho Launch funding for adult participants, which may help cover up to 80% of the tuition cost. High school seniors can apply for Idaho Launch student funds to use for this course after graduation. Students should meet with their high school counselors to discuss their options.
IS THERE A MINIMUM AGE TO ENROLL?
Students must be at least eighteen (18) years of age and have their high school diploma or GED to enroll in the Certified Phlebotomy Technician program.

HOW OFTEN DO YOU OFFER THIS COURSE?
