Fundamentals of Technical Writing

Course Overview:

This self-guided online course provides students with an introduction to the fundamental techniques of technical writing. Over the course of twelve lessons, students will gain an understanding of how to translate complex information into easily understood language, organize and present information, and format documents for different purposes. Students will leave class prepared to confidently draft technical documents in professional settings.

Learning Outcomes:

By the end of this course, participants will be equipped to:

• Explain common technical writing conventions, such as parallel structure, inverted pyramid style, and effective uses of headings and lists
• Efficiently gather, filter, and organize information to create effective technical documents
• Format documents in Microsoft Word, including creating templates and indexes and modifying document layouts
• Draft a technical document from start to finish, including editing, proofreading, and printing/publishing
