Medical Billing and Coding
Course Overview
This self-paced online course is designed to prepare students for a career in medical billing and coding. The course curriculum is broken into two main segments: Medical Terminology and Medical Billing and Coding. Through a strategic progression of online learning modules, students will build a foundation of knowledge that will prepare them to sit for certifying exams and enter the healthcare field as qualified job candidates.
Learning Outcomes
By the end of this course, participants will be equipped to:
- Understand and utilize medical terminology accurately and efficiently
- Code diagnoses, services, and procedures for all systems of the body, including musculoskeletal, cardiovascular, respiratory, digestive, nervous, endocrine, integumentary, genitourinary, lymphatic, and immune
- Explain the legal, ethical, and regulatory concepts central to the field, including HIPAA compliance and third-party guidelines for filing insurance claims
- Utilize coding conventions from the following coding manuals: ICD-10-CM, ICD-10-PCS, CPT, and HCPCS Level II
Certification
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to select a study guide and voucher for their chosen certifying exam for medical billing and coding. After passing their exam, students will be certified to work in the healthcare field as a Medical Biller and Coder. Please note that students must have a high school diploma or GED in order to sit for national exams.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE TO COMPLETE THIS COURSE?
After students register, they have one year to complete this course series. Students can request a course extension through Ed2Go by contacting the student advising team. Please note that there may be a fee charged for course extensions.
DO YOU OFFER PAYMENT PLANS?
No. Payment is due in full at the time of registration for all WTCE classes. However, students may be able to arrange a payment plan with Ed2Go.
IS THERE FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE AVAILABLE?
This course is approved for Idaho Launch funding, which could help cover up to 80% of the tuition cost. For more information, please visit the Idaho Launch website or see the Financial Assistance tab on our WTCE homepage.
DOES THE TUITION COST INCLUDE COURSE MATERIALS?
Yes. Students will receive access to digital textbooks for the first portion of this course and will receive physical textbooks in the mail for the second portion. The course cost also includes a voucher and study guide for a certifying exam.
ARE THERE PREREQUISITES FOR THIS COURSE?
There are no prerequisites for enrolling in this course. However, please note that students must have a high school diploma or GED in order to sit for national certification exams. Due to this restriction, it is recommended that you have completed high school before enrolling in this course.
HOW DO I REGISTER FOR THIS COURSE?
This is an open-enrollment course, so you can enroll at any time. If you have a voucher from Idaho Launch or WIOA, you will need to contact our offices at 208-535-5345.
CAN I TEST OUT OF MEDICAL TERMINOLOGY?
Yes, if you have previous knowledge of medical terminology, you may be eligible to test out of the first portion of this course. This can be done in the Ed2Go student portal once you have completed your registration. Students utilizing third party funding may not be eligible to test out. WHAT KIND OF SUPPORT WILL I RECEIVE DURING THIS COURSE?
This self-paced course is designed to be user-friendly and support independent learning. However, you can utilize the student support feature in the Ed2Go student portal to contact your instructors with questions, discussions, or course content issues. You can also contact the Ed2Go student advising team for administrative/technical support issues.
