POST Basic Training Academies

The College of Eastern Idaho, Workforce Training & Continuing Education is an accredited Law Enforcement Certification Program by the Idaho Peace Officer Standards & Training (POST) Council for Adult Detention Officers and Patrol Officers as of March 6, 2025.

Patrol and Detention are approved through Idaho Launch for individual funding assistance. Additional funding may be available.

DETENTION

In Idaho, a detention officer, also known as a county detention officer, is an employee responsible for the safety, care, and monitoring of inmates within a county detention facility. They work under the supervision of a sergeant and perform tasks like controlling inmate behavior, conducting searches, and maintaining records. Idaho POST (Peace Officer Standards and Training) requires detention officers to be certified within one year of hire.  

CEI Detention Basic Academy is 7 weeks; 8 hours a day for 5 days per week

PATROL

Patrol or peace officer means any employee of a police or law enforcement agency which is a part of or administered by the state or any political subdivision thereof and whose duties include and primarily consist of the prevention and detection of crime and the enforcement of penal, traffic or highway laws of this state or any political subdivision. "Peace officer" also means an employee of a police or law enforcement agency of a federally recognized Indian tribe who has satisfactorily completed the peace officer standards and training academy and has been deputized by a sheriff of a county or a chief of police of a city of the state of Idaho.

CEI Patrol Basic Academy is 18 weeks; 9.5 hours per day; 4 days per week
