IDAHO FALLS, Idaho — College of Eastern Idaho (CEI) celebrated a major milestone during its 2025 Commencement Ceremony on Tuesday, May 13, over 80 high school seniors from 19 area high schools crossed the stage with associate degrees in hand, all before receiving their high school diplomas. This marks the largest group of Early College graduates in CEI’s history.

These students are part of CEI’s Early College Program, which allows eligible high school students to take college-level courses, often referred to as dual credit or dual enrollment, while still completing their high school education. The program provides a head start on college and career pathways, allowing students to save time and money while experiencing the rigor of college coursework.

In addition to the associate degree earners, over 2 dozen students also achieved GEM (General Education Matriculation) completion, meaning they completed at least 36 college-level general education credits, preparing them for seamless transfer to Idaho’s public colleges and universities and beyond.

“College of Eastern Idaho is incredibly proud of these outstanding young students who pursue ambitious goals at such an early age,” said Mary Stephenson, Dean of Early College. “We are thankful for the Idaho Advanced Opportunities program and our valued partnerships with local high schools, which play a vital role in turning student aspirations into achievements. It’s truly an honor to see these students walk across the stage, be recognized for earning degrees and certificates, and celebrate with their families and support systems. We look forward with great anticipation to their bright futures.”

CEI’s Early College Program maintains the same academic standards, expectations, and course content as all college-level coursework at CEI. Students must meet eligibility requirements and are responsible for their performance under standard college policies.

The program is made widely accessible through Idaho’s Advanced Opportunities funding, which covers tuition for most eligible high school students. This allows families to save thousands in future college costs while helping students gain a clearer sense of their academic and career goals.

CEI President Lori Barber has the greatest respect for these students and their hard work. “At College of Eastern Idaho, we believe in the power of potential. These students prove that with opportunity and support, there’s no limit to what young minds can achieve.”

CEI encourages students and parents across eastern Idaho to explore Early College opportunities. Dual Enrollment courses are available at area high schools, through IDLA (Idaho Digital Learning Alliance), or directly through CEI. Students and parents can speak with their high school counselor or contact the CEI Early College Office to explore which options are available in their local area. Whether a student is working toward a full degree, exploring one or two classes, or wants to get ahead on general education requirements, CEI’s Early College Program provides flexible, high-impact options to prepare them for the future.
