Types of Dual Credit

Dual Credit in the High School
  • Many high schools have qualified teachers who teach college-level classes to high school students.  Due to the rigor and nature of the content, these classes can also grant college credit if the student completes the registration steps with the associated college or university. These classes typically follow the high school schedule (i.e., the class is taught by trimester), and they must be registered into a high school schedule with the help of the student’s high school counselor.
  • SUCCESS TIP: Not every dual credit class in a high school is taught through the same college. Talk to your high school counselor for a full list of dual credit classes and the college each class goes through.
  • SUCCESS TIP: All credit will need to be transferred by requesting individual transcripts from each college you took classes through. Keep a note or document on your phone tracking the classes you take, including the college or university granting you credit.
Dual Credit through IDLA
  • Idaho Digital Learning Alliance is an online platform that provides high school students with access to dual credit courses. These courses are great for young students who are just starting out. The quality and content of these classes is high; students outside of high school do not typically have access to IDLA dual credit courses, meaning the classes will not be mixed with adults like they would in a typical college class.
  • SUCCESS TIP: If you are unsure how a specific IDLA class will count towards a future goal, reach out to your CEI college advisor for help and guidance.
Dual Credit through Campus
  • We offer fully online, synchronous online (by Zoom), and face-to-face options for any student who is interested in taking a class directly through CEI’s campus. Students are welcome to mix and match course types as needed, depending on scheduling and course availability.
  • Make an appointment with your college advisor for help with planning, understanding course options, and applying classes to future goals. All students are required to meet the eligibility and prerequisite requirements for any course taught through CEI.
  • Your CEI advisor can help blend high school and college schedules, which can be complex. They will help you get logged into the CEI systems, support you in submitting your Advanced Opportunities funding requests, and answer any questions that you have through the process.
  • SUCCESS TIP: Classes taken through campus can feel faster paced and more rigorous due to the differences in scheduling compared to taking it at a high school. Meet with your CEI advisor before taking a class to make sure you have a balanced schedule.
